Being a parent can be an exciting and daunting experience. While taking care of your newborn, it’s also important to look after yourself too. New Mums have shared tips on how they looked after their physical and mental health.
1. Make sure you eat and drink regularly
It's very important that your baby/babies get all their nutrients especially as they grow. But it’s vital that you also get yours too. Your body needs to recover after giving birth, and you need energy to look after yourself and your baby.
UPMC estimates that nursing women need about 500 extra calories each day, as well as plenty of protein, calcium and fluids to stay healthy and produce nutritious breast milk.
If you have concerns about your weight management the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence have published useful guidance.
2. Being a parent is a journey, you will always be learning
It's alright to not have all the answers. Being a parent is a journey that never truly ends. With every day brings new experience with its own unique challenges and rewards. No matter how many children you have or how much experience you have as a parent, you will always be learning.
3. Don't be afraid to ask for help or to accept help
While parenting can be really rewarding, there are times when parenting can also feel challenging. You may feel overwhelmed, stressed, and tired. However, it's important to remember that you don't have to go through it alone. Don't be afraid to ask for help, whether this is from family members, friends, other parents or organisations such as The Maternal Mental Health Alliance, who can support you in your journey!
4. You are on your own parenting journey!
Parenting is a unique journey for every parent, and it's important to remember that comparisons can negatively impact our beliefs about our parenting skills. When we compare ourselves to others, we often feel like we need to meet a standard that may not align with our values and beliefs. Don't let others make you feel like you must meet a certain standard - trust your instincts, prioritise what's important to you and your family, and focus on your own parenting journey.
5. Practice mindfulness
Practicing mindfulness as a new mum helps you stay present in the moment, while managing stress and anxiety. Try taking a few minutes each day to focus on your breath, notice your surroundings, and tune in to your emotions without judgment. Think even about things you are grateful for each day. Remember, mindfulness is a practice - be patient with yourself and prioritize self-care to support your journey as a new mum.
